We welcome email from our students. It is a great way to contact your CLA adviser, but it does have its limitations.  To get the best response, there are a few things to remember when sending us an email:

1) Use your U of M email account.
Due to Federal privacy laws we cannot discuss your academic record with anyone but you. If you use an email address through a personal account or from your work, we have no way to verify that it is actually you we are responding to. We will only send you a response to your official U of M email address.

2) Include your full name and ID number.
Whether your name is Sarah Johnson or Yasuko Suga, we need to know your seven digit ID number. It's not about making people into numbers. It's about making sure that when we tell you that you're going to need three more semesters of chemistry that it really is you that needs them, and not the other Matt T.

3) Don't use your email to ask to schedule an appointment.
It has been our experience that arranging advising appointments through email is inefficient. If you want to schedule an appointment call 612-624-7540. You can also make one yourself online by going to http://ulook.umn.edu.

4) Some questions take time to answer.
Most of the time we are able to send you a quick response to your question, but some questions are more complex than they might seem at first. It is important to us that we give you accurate information and therefore it may take some time, even several days, to answer you through email. If you are in crisis, you should come in to our office to speak with someone in person.

5) Some questions can't be answered through email.
There are times when the scope of your question, for example, "What requirements do I have left before I can graduate?" is too big for an email and we will ask you to schedule an appointment to discuss your situation instead. Other reasons we will ask you to schedule an appointment may include times when we need to handle forms or give you printed information.
